Asia gains as Africa falters in latest Uni ranking

California Institute of Technology

The latest world University ranking shows universities in Asia are gaining ground against traditional academic giants in the US and Europe. But Africa still lags behind as only three universities in Africa made it to the top 400 in the 2012/2013 Reuters/Times Higher Education University ranking.

The Universities of Cape Town (113), Witwatersrand (226) and KwaZulu-Natal (351), all in South Africa, made it to the top 400.

US and UK shared the top 10 universities, with California Institute of Technology ranking as the best University for the second year running. University of Oxford jumped two places to tie at second position with Stanford University. Harvard and Massachusetts Institute of Technology closed the top five positions

Although the US still dominates the rankings, taking 76 spots in the top 200, 51 American institutions fell off the list, paving way for universities in Asia, specifically in China, Taiwan, Singapore and Republic of Korea.

The Nanyang Technological University in Singapore, for instance, jumped 83 places to 86th, thanks to a significant increase in research income, according to Times Higher Education survey.

Ranking is based on a number of indices reflecting the major reasons why Universities exist.

“The Times Higher Education World University Rankings are the only global university performance tables to judge research-led universities across all their core missions – teaching, research, knowledge transfer and international outlook,” states the rankings website

The ranking, released on October 3rd, also revealed top universities by area of study.
