{"id":96753,"date":"2024-05-20T13:30:41","date_gmt":"2024-05-20T10:30:41","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.capitalfm.co.ke\/business\/?p=96753"},"modified":"2024-05-20T13:57:54","modified_gmt":"2024-05-20T10:57:54","slug":"kenya-united-states-commit-to-complete-trade-negotiations","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.capitalfm.co.ke\/business\/2024\/05\/kenya-united-states-commit-to-complete-trade-negotiations\/","title":{"rendered":"Kenya, United States commit to complete trade negotiations"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>NAIROBI, Kenya, My 20 &#8211; Kenya and the United States of America (USA) have agreed to complete ongoing trade negotiations under the Strategic Trade and Investment Partnership (STIP).<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>This was said during the fifth round of STIP negotiations between USA Trade Representative Katherine Tai and <span style=\"font-style: inherit;font-weight: inherit\">Kenya&#8217;s\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-style: inherit;font-weight: inherit\">Cabinet Secretary (CS) for Investment, Trade, and Industry, Rebecca Miano.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-style: inherit;font-weight: inherit\">CS Miano said that the two sides had made significant progress in several areas, including anticorruption, micro, small, and medium-sized enterprises (MSMEs), domestic service regulation, and the first tranche of agriculture text.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>\u201cThese provisions are designed to facilitate agricultural trade and advance food security; prevent and combat bribery and other forms of corruption; empower MSMEs in both economies; and ensure that service suppliers are treated fairly and in a transparent manner,\u201d CS Miano explained.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-style: inherit;font-weight: inherit\">The two parties<\/span><span style=\"font-style: inherit;font-weight: inherit\"> also agreed to continue negotiations in other areas to increase investment, promote sustainable and inclusive economic growth, benefit workers, and support African regional economic integration.<\/span><span style=\"font-style: inherit;font-weight: inherit\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>These provisions are intended to<span style=\"font-style: inherit;font-weight: inherit\"> ensure efficient customs procedures, enhance cooperation in enforcement,<\/span><span style=\"font-style: inherit;font-weight: inherit\"> promote workers\u2019 rights and protections, advance and support the environment, and support climate change objectives, among others.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-style: inherit;font-weight: inherit\">T<\/span><span style=\"font-style: inherit;font-weight: inherit\">he two sides recently concluded conceptual discussions on how STIP can advance the full, equitable, and meaningful participation in international trade and investment of all persons, including women, youth, persons with disabilities, other vulnerable populations, and the African Diaspora. <\/span><\/p>\n<p>Assistant United States Trade Representative Constance Hamilton and Kenya\u2019s Principal Secretary for Trade Alfred K\u2019Ombudo, who\u00a0<span style=\"font-style: inherit;font-weight: inherit\">are leading the<\/span><span style=\"font-style: inherit;font-weight: inherit\">\u00a0negotiating\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-style: inherit;font-weight: inherit\">teams<\/span><span style=\"font-style: inherit;font-weight: inherit\">, also co-chaired a public listening session.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-style: inherit;font-weight: inherit\">After announcing the launch of the STIP negotiations in July 2022, the USA and Kenya began conceptual discussions in Washington, DC, in February 2023 and commenced text-based negotiations in April 2023 in Nairobi, Kenya. <\/span><\/p>\n<p>The two sides have each hosted subsequent negotiating rounds, including the previous in-person negotiating round held April 2\u201312, 2024, in Washington, DC.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-style: inherit;font-weight: inherit\">The next round of negotiations will take place in June 2024.<\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>NAIROBI, Kenya, My 20 &#8211; Kenya and the United States of America (USA) have agreed to complete ongoing trade negotiations under the Strategic Trade and Investment Partnership (STIP).
