{"id":89832,"date":"2023-10-21T09:31:26","date_gmt":"2023-10-21T06:31:26","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.capitalfm.co.ke\/business\/?p=89832"},"modified":"2023-10-21T09:52:13","modified_gmt":"2023-10-21T06:52:13","slug":"infobip-unveils-solution-to-combat-fake-sms-traffic","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.capitalfm.co.ke\/business\/2023\/10\/infobip-unveils-solution-to-combat-fake-sms-traffic\/","title":{"rendered":"Infobip unveils solution to combat fake sms traffic"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><b><br \/>\n<\/b><b>NAIROBI, Kenya,\u00a0 Oct 21 &#8211; <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"><strong>As brands increasingly adopt SMS communication to connect with customers, cybercriminals are constantly developing new methods to exploit vulnerabilities in and around this channel.<\/strong> <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">To combat this problem, Infobip, a global cloud communications platform, has introduced &#8220;Signals&#8221; \u2014 an innovative solution designed to counteract the threats posed by SMS pumping.<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"><br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"><br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">&#8220;Infobip Signals&#8221;\u00a0employs\u00a0machine learning to automatically detect and block fraudulent SMS traffic\u00a0without any interventions from the business.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">This tool is for brands that want to protect their financial resources and maintain a genuine user base by preventing fake accounts that can harm their value.<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"><br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"><br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">SMS pumping, also known as artificially inflated traffic (AIT), is a form of fraud where attackers generate a substantial volume of fake SMS traffic through a business&#8217;s app or website to obtain one-time PINs (OTPs) or app download links via SMS.<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"><br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"><br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">In the realm of SMS pumping, fraudsters deploy automated bots to create fraudulent accounts and systematically input phone numbers into online forms linked to SMS systems. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">This triggers the delivery of OTP SMS messages, resulting in increased expenses for businesses, particularly when these fraudulent OTP requests are directed to high-cost SMS destinations.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Typically, businesses only become aware of this type of fraud when they investigate discrepancies between their SMS billing and the expected returns from SMS traffic. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Unusual OTP requests originating from regions or countries where a business does not usually receive traffic can serve as a red flag indicating potential SMS pumping fraud.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"><br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Researches have shown that SMS traffic fraud cost businesses a whooping Ksh1.4 trillion (USD 10 billion) globally in 2021. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The Kenya Economic Survey 2023 revealed a 20% increase in domestic SMS traffic, surging to 51.3 billion in 2022 from 42.8 billion the previous year. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">During the same period, international SMS messages sent to Kenya nearly twofold, reaching 34.8 million, compared to 19.8 million sent from the country.<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"><br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"><br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Cybersecurity advisories issued by various businesses in Kenya increased from 8 million in 2021 to 13.7 million in 2022.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> This increase can be attributed to the sophisticated and dynamic nature of cyber threats.<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"><br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"><br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">In its bi-annual consumer report, the Uganda Communication Commission (UCC) revealed that the country&#8217;s telecommunication operators received 205,511 complaints from consumers, including those related to SMS pumping fraud. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The report also indicates an increase in cybersecurity advisories issued by various businesses in Uganda in 2022.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">&#8220;In an ecosystem where every active user counts, and brand integrity is a priority, Infobip Signals is our answer to ensuring businesses can thrive without the burden of SMS fraud.
