{"id":84434,"date":"2023-04-15T13:00:31","date_gmt":"2023-04-15T10:00:31","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.capitalfm.co.ke\/business\/?p=84434"},"modified":"2023-04-15T11:51:10","modified_gmt":"2023-04-15T08:51:10","slug":"diaspora-remittances-rise-to-sh48bn-in-march","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.capitalfm.co.ke\/business\/2023\/04\/diaspora-remittances-rise-to-sh48bn-in-march\/","title":{"rendered":"Diaspora remittances rise to Sh48bn in March"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>NAIROBI, Kenya, April 15 &#8211; Kenyans living abroad sent home Sh48 billion in March, a 15.5 per cent increase compared to the Sh41.6 billion sent in February.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>According to the Central Bank of Kenya(CBK), the US remains the largest source of remittances into Kenya, accounting for 58 percent.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe remittance inflows continue to support the current account and the foreign exchange market,\u201d said CBK.<\/p>\n<p>The cumulative inflows for the 12 months to March 2023 totaled USD 4,020 million compared to USD 3,912 million in a similar period in 2022.<\/p>\n<p>Remittances not only represent an important source of forex but also support many livelihoods.<\/p>\n<p>According to an analysis by WorldRemit, education, healthcare, and household needs are the main uses of remittances in Kenya, sectors that tend to have a multiplier effect on development.<\/p>\n<p>The company also noted that Kenya is among the top 3 countries in Africa in receiving remittances, Nigeria came first followed by Zimbabwe.<\/p>\n<p>Digitization remains a key driver for the growth of remittance services, according to WorldRemit, which has partnered with local banks, allowing direct sending of money to accounts, and M-pesa.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>NAIROBI, Kenya, April 15 &#8211; Kenyans living abroad sent home Sh48 billion in March, a 15.5 per cent increase compared to the Sh41.6 billion sent in February.
