{"id":80300,"date":"2022-10-19T13:18:28","date_gmt":"2022-10-19T10:18:28","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.capitalfm.co.ke\/business\/?p=80300"},"modified":"2022-10-19T13:18:28","modified_gmt":"2022-10-19T10:18:28","slug":"wasoko-not-planning-to-leave-kenya-for-zanzibar","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.capitalfm.co.ke\/business\/2022\/10\/wasoko-not-planning-to-leave-kenya-for-zanzibar\/","title":{"rendered":"Wasoko not planning to leave Kenya for Zanzibar"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"font-weight: 400\"><strong>NAIROBI, Kenya, Oct 19 &#8211; Retail-tech start-up Wasoko is not planning to relocate its headquarters from Nairobi for Zanzibar.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400\">The firm was responding to allegations that it was planning to move its operations to the Indian Ocean country.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400\">In August 2022, the company set up an innovation center in Zanzibar to support its African operations.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400\">The hub comprises engineers, product managers, UX designers and researchers.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u00a0\u201cWasoko remains headquartered in Nairobi Kenya, after the launch of Zanzibar Innovation Hub,\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cWe are aware of growing reports which claim that Wasoko, Africa\u2019s largest B2B e-commerce network has relocated to Zanzibar and has failed in Kenya,\u201d the firm\u2019s CEO Daniel YU said in a statement.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400\">YU confirmed that the firm\u2019s headquarters is still located at the Senteu Plaza in Kilimani, Nairobi.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cOur operations in Kenya continue to be largest with 936 employees, supporting a local customer base of over 48,000,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400\">Wasoko first entered the Kenyan market in 2016, before expanding its wings to Tanzania, Rwanda, Uganda, Cote d Ivoire and Senegal.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400\">Early this year, it said it will be investing\u00a0at least $20 million (Sh2.29 billion) in Kenya to provide more small shop-owners with fast-moving consumer goods.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400\">This came after the company raised $125 million (Sh14.29 billion) from international investors, which is a record series B funding raised by a non-fintech firm in Kenya as well as Africa.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400\">The equity-round was led the World\u2019s largest venture capital firm Tiger Global and Avenir Growth Capital with participation of VNV Global, Binny Bansal (co-founder of Flipkart) and Sujeet Kumar (co-founder Udaan) as well as existing investors such as Quona Capital, 4DX Ventures and JAM Fund.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>NAIROBI, Kenya, Oct 19 &#8211; Retail-tech start-up Wasoko is not planning to relocate its headquarters from Nairobi for Zanzibar.
