{"id":47978,"date":"2017-12-07T10:26:54","date_gmt":"2017-12-07T07:26:54","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.capitalfm.co.ke\/business\/?p=47978"},"modified":"2017-12-07T12:09:02","modified_gmt":"2017-12-07T09:09:02","slug":"world-bank-revises-kenyas-2017-economic-growth-to-4-9pc","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.capitalfm.co.ke\/business\/2017\/12\/world-bank-revises-kenyas-2017-economic-growth-to-4-9pc\/","title":{"rendered":"World Bank revises Kenya&#8217;s 2017 economic growth to 4.9pc"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.capitalfm.co.ke\/business\/files\/2016\/06\/WORLD-BANK.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-37927\" src=\"https:\/\/www.capitalfm.co.ke\/business\/files\/2016\/06\/WORLD-BANK.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"630\" height=\"350\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.capitalfm.co.ke\/business\/files\/2016\/06\/WORLD-BANK.jpg 630w, https:\/\/www.capitalfm.co.ke\/business\/files\/2016\/06\/WORLD-BANK-300x167.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 630px) 100vw, 630px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><strong>NAIROBI, Kenya, Dec 7 &#8211; The World Bank has revised Kenya\u2019s economic growth from a projection of 5.5 percent to 4.9 percent for 2017.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>In its Economic Update on Kenya, the World Bank attributes the downward revision to drought that affected agricultural output and hydropower generation, a prolonged electioneering period and a slowdown of credit to the private sector.<\/p>\n<p>The slump in economic activity in 2017 has however been mitigated by a resurgent of the tourism sector, strong public investment and relatively low oil prices.<\/p>\n<p>The Bank maintains that while removal of interest rate cap will spur the flow of credit to the private sector, more will need to be done to bolster small and medium-size businesses.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cLowering credit cost and widening credit access sustainably call for a reduction in the benchmark risk-free government T-Bill and Bond rates, complemented by microeconomic reforms that include the universal adoption of credit scoring accelerating the implementation of the movable collateral registry and strengthening consumer protection and financial literacy,\u201d says Mehnaz Safavian, Lead Financial Sector Specialist at the World Bank.<\/p>\n<p>The Bank projects that the economy will grow at 5.5 percent in 2018 and 5.9 percent in 2019 if supporting policies are implemented and macroeconomic stability.<\/p>\n<p>Some of the structural and sectoral reforms needed to propel the economy include rationalizing public wages and salaries, strengthening revenue mobilization and improving efficiency in public investments.<\/p>\n<p>Senior Economist at the Bank, Allen Dennis, sees the easing of the headwinds that have characterized 2017 should lead to a rebound in the mid-term.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.capitalfm.co.ke\/business\/files\/2017\/12\/World-Bank.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-47984\" src=\"https:\/\/www.capitalfm.co.ke\/business\/files\/2017\/12\/World-Bank.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"620\" height=\"417\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.capitalfm.co.ke\/business\/files\/2017\/12\/World-Bank.jpg 854w, https:\/\/www.capitalfm.co.ke\/business\/files\/2017\/12\/World-Bank-300x202.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.capitalfm.co.ke\/business\/files\/2017\/12\/World-Bank-768x517.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 620px) 100vw, 620px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>NAIROBI, Kenya, Dec 7 &#8211; The World Bank has revised Kenya\u2019s economic growth from a projection of 5.5 percent to 4.9 percent for 2017.
