{"id":44469,"date":"2017-04-28T16:38:03","date_gmt":"2017-04-28T13:38:03","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.capitalfm.co.ke\/business\/?p=44469"},"modified":"2017-04-28T16:38:03","modified_gmt":"2017-04-28T13:38:03","slug":"uhuru-breaks-ground-158mw-olkaria-v-power-project","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.capitalfm.co.ke\/business\/2017\/04\/uhuru-breaks-ground-158mw-olkaria-v-power-project\/","title":{"rendered":"Uhuru breaks ground for 158MW for Olkaria V power project"},"content":{"rendered":"<div id=\"attachment_44470\" style=\"width: 640px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.capitalfm.co.ke\/business\/files\/2017\/04\/UHURU-OLKARIA-GEOTHERMAL.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-44470\" src=\"https:\/\/www.capitalfm.co.ke\/business\/files\/2017\/04\/UHURU-OLKARIA-GEOTHERMAL.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"630\" height=\"350\" class=\"size-full wp-image-44470\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.capitalfm.co.ke\/business\/files\/2017\/04\/UHURU-OLKARIA-GEOTHERMAL.jpg 630w, https:\/\/www.capitalfm.co.ke\/business\/files\/2017\/04\/UHURU-OLKARIA-GEOTHERMAL-300x167.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 630px) 100vw, 630px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-44470\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">The President at the same time commissioned 14 wellhead units producing a total of 75MW of electricity\/PSCU<\/p><\/div>\n<p><strong>NAIVASHA, Kenya, Apr 28 &#8211; President Uhuru Kenyatta Friday broke ground for the construction of the Olkaria V power project which will produce 158MW of electricity.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The President at the same time commissioned 14 wellhead units producing a total of 75MW of electricity. <\/p>\n<p>The &#8216;wellhead unit&#8217; is a unique technology developed by Kenyan engineers to harness geothermal power, which has reduced the duration between the first drilling of a well and installation of a geothermal plant from five years to two years.<\/p>\n<p>The President challenged other Kenyan institutions to adopt the innovative approach of KenGen to transform the country.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Innovation must be the new identity of Kenyan institutions if we are going to see the transformation Kenyans demand,&#8221; said the President when he spoke at the function at Olkaria, Nakuru County.<\/p>\n<p>President Kenyatta said the Jubilee Government has a clear vision to provide sufficient, cheap, green and reliable energy for Kenya.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Once again, the path is clear: we expect that the peak load will grow to about 15,000MW by 2030; that demand will be met by raising installed capacity gradually to 19,200MW by 2030,&#8221; said the President.<\/p>\n<p>He said the expansion of geothermal power production will contribute to Kenya&#8217;s prosperity.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;In commissioning these wells, and in breaking ground for the new project, we take a mighty step on the road to prosperity for this nation,&#8221; said the President.<\/p>\n<p>He said Kenya has one of the largest reserves of geothermal energy and more plants will be constructed to harness the power for the benefit of Kenyans.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;That this form of energy is not subject to the vagaries of the weather, and that it runs at a respectable rate more than 90pc of the time every year, means that we can bring reliable power to every Kenyan home,&#8221; said the President.<\/p>\n<p>Energy Cabinet Secretary Charles Keter said Kenya has come a long way and is a trendsetter in the energy sector.<\/p>\n<p>He said President Kenyatta has shown total commitment to maintain and increase Kenya&#8217;s global leadership in green energy production and consumption.<\/p>\n<p>Nakuru Governor Kinuthia Mbugua and Japan&#8217;s Ambassador to Kenya also spoke at the function.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>NAIVASHA, Kenya, Apr 28 &#8211; President Uhuru Kenyatta Friday broke ground for the construction of the Olkaria V power project which will produce 158MW of electricity.
