{"id":42519,"date":"2017-02-02T11:17:54","date_gmt":"2017-02-02T08:17:54","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.capitalfm.co.ke\/business\/?p=42519"},"modified":"2017-02-08T14:38:49","modified_gmt":"2017-02-08T11:38:49","slug":"east-africa-mega-projects-reduce-half-2016-deloitte-report","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.capitalfm.co.ke\/business\/2017\/02\/east-africa-mega-projects-reduce-half-2016-deloitte-report\/","title":{"rendered":"East Africa mega projects reduce by half in 2016: Deloitte Report"},"content":{"rendered":"<div>\n<div id=\"attachment_30637\" style=\"width: 650px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.capitalfm.co.ke\/business\/files\/2015\/05\/REAL-ESTATE-CONSTRUCTION.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-30637\" class=\"wp-image-30637 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.capitalfm.co.ke\/business\/files\/2015\/05\/REAL-ESTATE-CONSTRUCTION.jpg\" width=\"640\" height=\"427\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.capitalfm.co.ke\/business\/files\/2015\/05\/REAL-ESTATE-CONSTRUCTION.jpg 640w, https:\/\/www.capitalfm.co.ke\/business\/files\/2015\/05\/REAL-ESTATE-CONSTRUCTION-300x200.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 640px) 100vw, 640px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-30637\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">According to the report, the 2016 trends are similar to 2015, with the greatest number of mega projects recorded in the Transport sector followed by Real Estate, Energy &amp; Power and Shipping &amp; Ports\/FILE<\/p><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div><strong>NAIROBI, Kenya, Feb 1 &#8211; Africa\u2019s mega infrastructure spending in 2016 dropped by Sh5 trillion to Sh33 trillion following tough global macroeconomic conditions resulting in lower growth forecasts.<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>\u00a0<\/strong><br \/>\nThis is according to a new report by Deloitte which states that construction projects that had broken ground by 1 June 2016 &#8211; and are valued at Sh5 billion or higher &#8211; stood at 286 in 2016 compared to 301 recorded in the previous year.<\/div>\n<p>Of these, East Africa contributed 43 projects valued at Sh2.8 trillion, a 52 percent drop from 2015.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThese construction trends reflect lower growth forecasts globally for 2016 and 2017,\u201d said,\u201d said John-Pierre Labuschagne, Infrastructure and Capital Projects Leader, Deloitte Africa, adding that the lower commodity prices over the past 24 months have acted as a drag on infrastructure spend.<\/p>\n<p>As a result, spending in the extractive industries, such as mining and oil and gas, has declined sharply in the last 18 months.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNot surprisingly, the share of mining projects more than halved to 2.8 percent while Oil &amp; Gas decreased to 4.5 percent,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>Consequently, the delayed mining projects have impacted the tax revenue available to governments, which in turn has a knock-on effect on infrastructure spending.<\/p>\n<p>According to the report, the 2016 trends are similar to 2015, with the greatest number of mega projects recorded in the Transport sector followed by Real Estate, Energy &amp; Power and Shipping &amp; Ports. East Africa mirrored the continental data, with the Transport sector leading at 47%.<\/p>\n<p>There are 15 Road and Bridge projects currently underway, while Energy and Power projects accounted for just over a quarter of all projects in the region worth US$10.7billion.<\/p>\n<p>Of the 11 Energy and Power projects, six are renewable energy focused.<\/p>\n<p>The Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam is the largest development in East Africa at US$4.1 billion, while the Lake Turkana Wind Power Project is the single largest private sector investment in Kenya\u2019s history.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe suspension of the Bagamoyo Port Project (worth US$11 billion), due to austerity measures introduced in Tanzania in order to reduce the widening budget deficit, has resulted in a significant decrease in the value of ongoing projects in East Africa,\u201d said J-P.<\/p>\n<p>As a region, West Africa bucked the trend to record an increase in the number of projects, reporting the most projects \u2013 92 up from 72 \u2013 and recorded the most value &#8211; US$120billion.<\/p>\n<p>Despite the region\u2019s strong showing, South Africa was the single country with the largest number of projects &#8211; 41 &#8211; followed by Nigeria with 38.<\/p>\n<p>However, Southern Africa recorded 85 projects from 109 previously, valued at a cumulative $93 billion from $140 billion previously.<\/p>\n<p>In terms of financing the infrastructure capital developments, African Development Finance Institutions (DFIs) and China together fund nearly half of all mega projects in the region, with each funding 23.3 percent.<\/p>\n<p>International DFIs accounted for 18.6 percent in 2016, while Governments on the other hand own majority of the projects 86 percent.<\/p>\n<p>On project implementers, China is the most visible builder developing 41.9 percent of all projects in East Africa.<\/p>\n<p>Across the continent, Chinese interest in evident in the Energy and Power sector, where they are involved in the construction of 11 of the identified hydropower projects, while funding nine.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>NAIROBI, Kenya, Feb 1 &#8211; Africa\u2019s mega infrastructure spending in 2016 dropped by Sh5 trillion to Sh33 trillion following tough global macroeconomic conditions resulting in lower growth forecasts. \u00a0 This is according to a new report by Deloitte which states that construction projects that had broken ground by 1 June 2016 &#8211; and are valued [&hellip;]<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":13662,"featured_media":0,"comment_status":"open","ping_status":"open","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"footnotes":""},"categories":[1,800,687],"tags":[],"coauthors":[697],"class_list":["post-42519","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","hentry","category-kenya","category-manufacturing","category-top-stories"],"yoast_head":"<!-- This site is optimized with the Yoast SEO Premium plugin v25.7.1 (Yoast SEO v27.5) -
