{"id":42462,"date":"2017-01-30T16:09:13","date_gmt":"2017-01-30T13:09:13","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.capitalfm.co.ke\/business\/?p=42462"},"modified":"2017-01-30T16:10:16","modified_gmt":"2017-01-30T13:10:16","slug":"manufacturers-identify-five-key-areas-to-rev-up-sector","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.capitalfm.co.ke\/business\/2017\/01\/manufacturers-identify-five-key-areas-to-rev-up-sector\/","title":{"rendered":"Manufacturers identify five key areas to rev up sector"},"content":{"rendered":"<div id=\"attachment_42463\" style=\"width: 650px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.capitalfm.co.ke\/business\/files\/2017\/01\/KAM-LAUNCH.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-42463\" class=\"size-full wp-image-42463\" src=\"https:\/\/www.capitalfm.co.ke\/business\/files\/2017\/01\/KAM-LAUNCH.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"640\" height=\"410\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.capitalfm.co.ke\/business\/files\/2017\/01\/KAM-LAUNCH.jpg 640w, https:\/\/www.capitalfm.co.ke\/business\/files\/2017\/01\/KAM-LAUNCH-300x192.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 640px) 100vw, 640px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-42463\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Kenya Association of Manufacturers has launched the priority agenda 2017 to boost the sector.<\/p><\/div>\n<p><strong>NAIROBI, Kenya, Jan 30 \u2013 Manufacturers in Kenya have listed five priority areas to jump start a sector that has experienced a slump in the recent past, growing slower than the GDP since 2014.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>At the top of the manufacturer\u2019s agenda is a review of the regulatory policy framework that will support the sector under the devolved system.<\/p>\n<p>Other focus areas unveiled by the Kenya Association of Manufacturers (KAM) include infrastructure expansion, enhancing local content, long-term financing access and SME expansion.<\/p>\n<p>The priority areas, if pushed through, aims to increase the sector\u2019s contribution to the GDP, spur job creation and increase foreign exchange earnings.<\/p>\n<p>The manufacturing sector grew at a dismal rate of 1.9 percent in the last quarter of 2016 against a target of 8.7 percent set by the Vision 2030\u2019s Medium-term Plan II.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhen compared to other rapidly industrialising nations, Kenya\u2019s manufacturing sector growth rate is the lowest. Vietnam has grown at its highest ever rate in the last five years but it still falls short of Ethiopia which grew at 15.8 percent,\u201d notes KAM\u2019s 2017 Agenda report.<\/p>\n<p>The report further says Kenya\u2019s service-driven economic growth could lead to a jobless growth, \u201cwhich is unsustainable in the long term.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The Association\u2019s Chief Executive Phyllis Wakiaga says creating and expanding markets locally and internationally remains a crucial factor to grow the country\u2019s manufacturing output.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe also want to see improved operational excellence within the sector and grow the number of manufacturers in the country,\u201d says Wakiaga.<\/p>\n<p>The turnaround plan comes as exports to the key EAC market declined by 23 percent, a factor that contributed to the dwindling manufacturing sector over the last two years.<\/p>\n<p>The association says the Buy-Kenya, Build-Kenya policy through the preference and reservation regulations will tighten the 40 percent local content requiring the\u00a0government to buy goods made in Kenya.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>NAIROBI, Kenya, Jan 30 \u2013 Manufacturers in Kenya have listed five priority areas to jump start a sector that has experienced a slump in the recent past, growing slower than the GDP since 2014.
