{"id":113821,"date":"2026-03-24T16:30:31","date_gmt":"2026-03-24T13:30:31","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.capitalfm.co.ke\/business\/?p=113821"},"modified":"2026-03-24T16:12:16","modified_gmt":"2026-03-24T13:12:16","slug":"nairobi-leads-in-power-consumption-epra-data-shows","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.capitalfm.co.ke\/business\/2026\/03\/nairobi-leads-in-power-consumption-epra-data-shows\/","title":{"rendered":"Nairobi leads in power consumption, EPRA data shows"},"content":{"rendered":"<p data-pm-slice=\"1 1 []\"><strong>NAIROBI, Kenya, Mar 24 &#8211; Nairobi is the leading consumer of power nationwide, latest data from the Energy and Petroleum Regulatory Authority (EPRA) shows.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>In the half-year ending December 2025, the region accounted for 44.24 percent of the country\u2019s total energy use, according to EPRA&#8217;s 2025\/26 Biannual Energy and Petroleum Statistics Report.<\/p>\n<p>Nairobi\u2019s electricity consumption rose to 2,627.44 A gigawatt-hour (GWh) from 2,415.44 GWh in the same period last year, representing an 8.78 percent increase.<\/p>\n<p>The region includes Kiambu, Kajiado, Machakos, and Makueni counties, reflecting the area\u2019s growing commercial and residential energy demands.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe country&#8217;s half year electrical energy utilization grew by 8.27% from 5,484.54 GWh in a similar period in the previous year to 5,938.14 GWh,\u201d read the report in part.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNairobi region was the leading consumer of electrical energy accounting for 44.24% of total electrical energy utilization in the country. Nairobi utilized 2,627.44 GWh up from 2,415.44 GWh in the half year ended December 2024, an increase of 8.78%.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The Coast region ranked second, using 977.90 GWh, representing 16.46 percent of the country\u2019s total consumption, a slight decline of 1.04 percent from the previous year.<\/p>\n<p>EPRA\u2019s report noted that this was the only region to record a drop in electricity use.<\/p>\n<p>Other regions, including North Eastern consumption, saw their consumption increase by 13.73 percent to 666.98 GWh, while South Nyanza saw the highest regional growth at 22.53 percent, despite having the lowest total consumption at 123.38 GWh.<\/p>\n<p>Central Rift, Mt.
