She was brought up by parents who were teachers, and like many young people then, she had little to no exposure to women pursuing science-related professions.

But one thing stood out for her: her love for learning—a habit that gradually shaped her interest in science. This curiosity eventually set her on a path into one of the most complex areas in science: health research and ethics.

Today, Kamuya is the Head of the Health Systems and Research Ethics Department at the KEMRI-Wellcome Trust Research Programme, where she leads and collaborates on studies exploring the ethical, social and cultural dimensions of health research in Africa.

Her work focuses on ensuring that scientific research is conducted responsibly and in ways that respond to the needs and realities of communities. She also works to strengthen ethical standards in studies involving emerging technologies, pandemics, and vaccine equity.

In an interview with Capital FM, she reflects on her journey into research, the challenges women face in scientific careers, and the growing role of community voices in shaping ethical health research.

Can you tell us about your journey into research and what inspired you to pursue a career in health systems and research ethics?

As a middle child, I was good at finding nooks where I could hide away to read a book – my siblings always chided me about this, and my mum knew where she could get me when searching for someone to run errands. At the time, there were very few women pursuing science-related subjects and professions in my area. But I was always excited about doing something that is challenging, hence my interest in science subjects.

My career in research started much later in my life, when I joined the KEMRI-Wellcome Trust Programme to help set up its community engagement platform. I was lucky to join a Research Institute that had, at its very core, the goal to undertake high-quality rigorous research and to build capacity for African-led research.

I was also extremely lucky to work with women leaders in research, who also became my mentors. After my PhD studies and having grown as a researcher, I was recruited into the post of Head of Health Systems and Research Ethics, one of four scientific departments in the Programme.

As the Head of the Health Systems and Research Ethics Department at KEMRI-Wellcome Trust Research Programme, what does your role involve on a day-to-day basis?

I am a researcher, a head of a scientific department, a leader, and a mentor/supervisor. My main role involves undertaking research to inform on the ethical and socio-cultural considerations for research undertaken in our settings.

I lead and collaborate with other researchers in several studies, including those that are about emerging technologies, response to pandemics and health stressors, vaccine equity studies, among others.

I also lead the research ethics group in the department, in which we aim to strengthen the ethical conduct of research in our settings. The department includes other research groups that lead different types of studies across various health systems research areas. These include those related to health financing, evidence-informed policy making, and quality health service delivery.

The research that we conduct must aim to respond to priority areas in our health care systems. My day-to-day work means that I must be clear on what those priority areas are and how we can ask the right research questions.

In addition to leadership roles, capacity building in research is a core component of my work. Together with our teams, we build research capacities through various ways, including on-the-job training of staff, supervising master’s and PhD students, and junior researchers.

My role also included developing collaborative research with local, regional, and global researchers and teams, and with key stakeholders.

Was there a defining moment or experience that shaped your interest in bioethics and community engagement?

Early in my career, I was lucky to have worked with an organisation that was promoting community-driven development. I saw firsthand how resourceful communities are at solving their problems. I witnessed how communities could mobilise resources and negotiate for funding of their projects, evaluate and report to various stakeholders, including funders. This was transformational, placing community voices at the centre of programmes became a passion that I hold dearly today.

The value and contribution of community voices in issues that matter to them was not new to me; it is something I grew up with. In the rural area where I come from, I witnessed our community organising itself to repair roads, construct schools, dig boreholes, pay school fees for the needy, and support each other in times of need.

I saw how my father and mother, my elder siblings, and later myself were always involved in various community projects. Indeed, the Alma-Ata declaration of 1978 on public health placed primary health care (and thus communities) at the very centre of public health. Thus, I used to be amazed that research took so long to recognise and promote community involvement. However, over the last decade or so, there has been a complete shift and a deeper recognition and appreciation of the role of community engagement in health research.

It is now seen as part of strengthening the ethical conduct of research, and is critically evaluated alongside the rigour of a proposed research.

Funders and reviewers now demand that researchers must show how communities and stakeholders have informed the research questions and the methodologies proposed, and how they would be involved in the research conduct. This helps strengthen the relevance of the research to the context and potentially also the acceptability of the findings.

What challenges did you face as a woman pursuing a career in research, and how did you overcome them?

Women face multiple challenges across all disciplines, but many of these challenges are surmountable. Issues of male-dominated fields and spaces with little room for women to grow and thrive, limited and highly competitive research funding, women still bearing greater child-bearing responsibilities, which stagnate their career advancement, few female leaders in many sectors, and certainly in health research, inter- and intra-disciplinary competitions, where some disciplines are more valued than others, are some of the challenges.

Despite these, the world is changing fast, women are leading and changing world-view about the contribution they make in different fields and disciplines; the number of women role models is increasing; the research ecosystems are changing, and matrices that recognise different types and levels of contribution in research meritocracy are increasingly becoming adopted.

In overcoming these challenges, there is no shortcut to hard work, commitment, and being intentional in making use of the platforms we have to amplify the voices of those that are not heard enough, not listened to, not sought, and sometimes not recognised.

We can do better. I stand on the shoulders of giants who believed in me; I, too, hope I am a shoulder for another to stand on. I hope to see a more just and equal society, where one’s abilities are embraced and celebrated regardless of who or what they are.

How would you describe the progress women have made in scientific research in Kenya?

There are many exciting stories of women researchers from diverse disciplines in our country today than a few years back, but these are not nearly enough; more needs to be done. Many women researchers and leaders are changing the way leadership is viewed, and I am extremely lucky to know and work with some of them.

The contribution of women in health research includes the work of Prof. Isabella Oyier, who is leading the Biosciences Department in our Programme, Prof. Emelda Okiro, who is leading population health research across Africa and Prof. Melissa Kapulu, who is leading work that aims to inform on early vaccine development, among others.

What advice would you give to young girls in Kenya who aspire to become scientists or researchers, and what barriers still exist for women pursuing careers in science and research?

You are living in exciting times, when women are taking over various disciplines, including as researchers, engineers, pilots, sports, music, and so on. The world is your oyster, you have the potential to transform it be far better. Your voice matters; it is valued, use it. And as Lupita Nyong’o said in her Oscar acceptance speech, your dreams are valid.

Your fellowship focuses on how communities can be engaged in complex ethical issues like biobanking. Why is community engagement so important in such topics?

Research involves participants who are members of a society or community. Research aims to advance our knowledge on priority areas that we do not have knowledge about, or of interventions that would work in context. Hence, the research questions should often be relevant to the context. Involving communities in research is one way of strengthening the relevance of that research and of making sure that researchers conduct their research in ways that are socially and culturally acceptable and ethical.

Community engagement is thus an ethical imperative, especially in our societies where decision-making often involves several significant members of a family or/and society.

Your research touches on technologies like machine learning and biobanking. What ethical concerns should scientists and Kenyans be aware of as these technologies grow?

My work has largely been on biobanking and emerging research designs. Ethical challenges of emerging technologies may not be so new, but the challenges or complexities are in the nuances or the details. For example, for all types of research, we know that consent information presents particular challenges for various reasons; the language used may not be accessible to many potential participants, the rights of participants might not be explicit, the permissions that a participant should provide may not be well understood, and the decision-making processes might not take into account the views of significant others.

When a new technology is added to this myriad of issues, extra steps must be taken to make sure there is a good understanding of the new technology, its benefits and burdens, and so on. Benefits and benefit-sharing frameworks in health research are areas that can present particular challenges.

In addition, the nature of equitable partnerships in collaborative research is often not easy or straightforward.

There are also broader society-level issues, for example, do emerging technologies promote or undermine ethical considerations of fairness, equity, and justice? How can under-served communities benefit from these, rather than exacerbating their vulnerabilities? These are issues that societies must address.

Outside work, what do you enjoy doing in your free time?

Nowadays, I enjoy nature more, appreciate the beauty and serenity of quiet moments in green spaces. I still enjoy reading books, bookstores is a good place for me and spending time with my family.

NAIROBI, Kenya, Mar 20 – As she was growing up, Dr. Dorcas Kamuya never imagined that she would one day become a researcher.
