{"id":113416,"date":"2026-03-12T15:30:27","date_gmt":"2026-03-12T12:30:27","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.capitalfm.co.ke\/business\/?p=113416"},"modified":"2026-03-12T15:19:41","modified_gmt":"2026-03-12T12:19:41","slug":"kenya-could-reclaim-sh92bn-annually-by-tackling-digital-piracy","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.capitalfm.co.ke\/business\/2026\/03\/kenya-could-reclaim-sh92bn-annually-by-tackling-digital-piracy\/","title":{"rendered":"Kenya could reclaim Sh92bn annually by tackling digital piracy"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>NAIROBI, Kenya, Mar 12 \u2013 Kenya could recover up to Sh92 billion annually for its creative economy if digital piracy is effectively addressed, according to industry leaders and regulators.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>They say the country is also losing about Sh17 billion in tax revenue each year due to the widespread illegal distribution of digital content.<\/p>\n<p>Speaking during the National Multi-Stakeholder Forum on Digital Piracy, Information, Communication and the Digital Economy Cabinet Secretary William Kabogo said piracy has become a major economic threat that undermines jobs, investor confidence and the sustainability of Kenya\u2019s creative sector.<\/p>\n<p>Kabogo noted that protecting intellectual property is critical for the country\u2019s ambition to build a competitive digital economy.<\/p>\n<p>Industry players warned that the continued circulation of pirated content is hurting artists and other professionals across the creative value chain.<\/p>\n<p>Mike Strano, Chair of the Partners Against Piracy Association of Kenya, said the industry is losing billions of shillings annually due to illegal distribution of music, films and television content.<\/p>\n<p>He noted that the losses mean very few artists are able to earn a sustainable income from their work.<\/p>\n<p>Kenya Copyright Board Acting Executive Director George Nyakweba said the government is proposing reforms under a new draft copyright bill to strengthen enforcement against piracy.<\/p>\n<p>The proposed law would give the board powers to impose fines, order rapid removal of pirated material and work with internet service providers to enforce compliance.<\/p>\n<p>Digital piracy in Kenya is most common in music, films and television content, followed by books, software and social media material.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Experts say the country is also losing about Sh17 billion in tax revenue each year due to the widespread illegal distribution of digital content.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":14438,"featured_media":26337,"comment_status":"closed","ping_status":"closed","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"footnotes":""},"categories":[1,13],"tags":[10877,26877,13840,934,822,10266],"coauthors":[9476],"class_list":["post-113416","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-kenya","category-technology","tag-annually","tag-could-reclaim","tag-digital-piracy","tag-featured","tag-kenya","tag-tackling"],"yoast_head":"<!-- This site is optimized with the Yoast SEO Premium plugin v25.7.1 (Yoast SEO v25.7) - https:\/\/yoast.com\/wordpress\/plugins\/seo\/ -->\n<title>Kenya could reclaim Sh92bn annually by tackling digital piracy - Capital Business<\/title>\n<meta name=\"description\" content=\"Experts say the country is also losing about Sh17 billion in tax revenue each year due to the widespread illegal distribution of digital content.
