{"id":109213,"date":"2025-10-21T14:01:24","date_gmt":"2025-10-21T11:01:24","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.capitalfm.co.ke\/business\/?p=109213"},"modified":"2025-10-21T13:30:51","modified_gmt":"2025-10-21T10:30:51","slug":"up-to-1-in-5-lung-cancer-patients-non-smokers-study","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.capitalfm.co.ke\/business\/2025\/10\/up-to-1-in-5-lung-cancer-patients-non-smokers-study\/","title":{"rendered":"Up to 1 in 5 lung cancer patients non-smokers: study"},"content":{"rendered":"<div id=\"partShare\" class=\"share bshare-custom icon-medium\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"clearfix\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"content\">\n<div id=\"detail\" class=\"main-aticle\">\n<p><strong>MELBOURNE, Oct. 21 (Xinhua) &#8212; Up to one in five people diagnosed with lung cancer globally aren&#8217;t smokers, a study involving Australian researchers found.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Lung cancer in nonsmokers, defined as having smoked fewer than 100 cigarettes in their lifetime, accounts for 15 to 20 percent of all lung cancer cases worldwide, said a review published by Australian and British researchers in JAMA, the Journal of the American Medical Association.<\/p>\n<p>Non-smokers with lung cancer have higher rates of cancer-related gene mutations, which appears to influence the effectiveness of different treatments for those patients, according to a summary of the study on the Australian Science Media Center website on Tuesday.<\/p>\n<p>After reviewing 92 previous international studies on lung cancer in non-smokers, the team, including Benjamin J. Solomon, researcher at Australia&#8217;s Peter MacCallum Cancer Center and University of Melbourne, found that most cancers in this group are adenocarcinomas, cancers that start in glandular cells.<\/p>\n<p>From the previous research, the authors said non-smokers at the highest risk of lung cancer are mostly those who are exposed to passive smoking, radioactive material, air pollution and asbestos, and history of lung cancer in a first-degree family member, including parents and full siblings, according to the summary.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>MELBOURNE, Oct. 21 (Xinhua) &#8212; Up to one in five people diagnosed with lung cancer globally aren&#8217;t smokers, a study involving Australian researchers found.
