{"id":108984,"date":"2025-10-13T09:33:57","date_gmt":"2025-10-13T06:33:57","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.capitalfm.co.ke\/business\/?p=108984"},"modified":"2025-10-13T08:29:44","modified_gmt":"2025-10-13T05:29:44","slug":"netherlands-cracks-down-on-china-owned-chip-firm-over-security-risk","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.capitalfm.co.ke\/business\/2025\/10\/netherlands-cracks-down-on-china-owned-chip-firm-over-security-risk\/","title":{"rendered":"Netherlands cracks down on China-owned chip firm over security risk"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"sc-3b6b161a-0 bPbmDW\" data-component=\"headline-block\"><\/div>\n<figure><\/figure>\n<div class=\"sc-3b6b161a-0 jdlrvG\" data-component=\"text-block\">\n<p class=\"sc-9a00e533-0 bJoRPJ\"><strong>OCT 13 &#8211; The Dutch government said on Sunday that it had taken the &#8220;highly exceptional&#8221; decision to intervene at Chinese-owned chipmaker Nexperia over a potential &#8220;risk to Dutch and European economic security.&#8221;<\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-9a00e533-0 bJoRPJ\">The Netherlands-based firm&#8217;s owner Wingtech said on Monday that it will take actions to protect its rights and will seek government support.<\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-9a00e533-0 bJoRPJ\">The development threatens to raise tensions between the European Union and China, which have increased in recent months over trade and Beijing&#8217;s relationship with Russia.<\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-9a00e533-0 bJoRPJ\"><a class=\"sc-f9178328-0 jZoZnB\" href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.com\/news\/uk-wales-68449303\" target=\"_self\">Nexperia was forced to sell its silicon chip plant in Newport<\/a>, Wales after MPs and ministers expressed national security concerns. It currently owns a UK facility in Stockport.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"sc-3b6b161a-0 jdlrvG\" data-component=\"text-block\">\n<p class=\"sc-9a00e533-0 bJoRPJ\"><a class=\"sc-f9178328-0 jZoZnB\" href=\"https:\/\/www.government.nl\/latest\/news\/2025\/10\/12\/minister-of-economic-affairs-invokes-goods-availability-act\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">The Dutch government said<\/a>\u00a0its economic affairs ministry had invoked its Goods Availability Act over &#8220;acute signals of serious governance shortcomings&#8221; within Nexperia.<\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-9a00e533-0 bJoRPJ\">The law is designed to allow the Hague to intervene in companies under exceptional circumstances. These include threats to the country&#8217;s economic security and to ensure the supply of critical goods.<\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-9a00e533-0 bJoRPJ\">The intervention is meant to prevent a potential situation in which Nexperia&#8217;s chips would become unavailable in an emergency, said the Dutch government.<\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-9a00e533-0 bJoRPJ\">It added that Nexperia&#8217;s operations posed a &#8220;threat to the continuity and safeguarding on Dutch and European soil of crucial technological knowledge and capabilities.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-9a00e533-0 bJoRPJ\">The company&#8217;s production can continue as normal, it added.<\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-9a00e533-0 bJoRPJ\">Nexperia makes semiconductors used in cars and consumer electronics.<\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-9a00e533-0 bJoRPJ\">The government statement did not detail why it thought the firm&#8217;s operations were risky. The BBC has contacted Dutch authorities for clarification.<\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-9a00e533-0 bJoRPJ\">Shanghai-listed shares in Nexperia&#8217;s parent company Wingtech fell by 10% on Monday morning.<\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-9a00e533-0 bJoRPJ\">Wingtech is among the firms the US has placed on its so-called &#8220;entity list&#8221;.
