NAIROBI, Kenya, Dec 9 – Tanzanian conglomerate Amsons Group is accelerating its renewable energy ambitions in East Africa, following a Sh96 billion (US$600 million) deal to develop a 1 Gigawatt (GW) solar power plant in Zambia, the largest in Sub-Saharan Africa.
The investment through our Zambian subsidiary, Africa Power Generation, marks Amsons Group’s strategic expansion from cement and logistics into large-scale power generation in the region.
The company says that while the project addresses Zambia’s electricity deficits caused by prolonged droughts, it also signals opportunities for Kenya.
“We are exploring renewable energy opportunities in Kenya, Tanzania, and Uganda,” Amsons Group Managing Director Edha Nahdi said from Lusaka.
“This project is about creating sustainable jobs, building local capacity, and contributing to resilient energy systems across the region.”
Amsons has strengthened its footprint in Kenya through its recent acquisition of Bamburi Cement and a stake in East African Portland Cement, giving it the financial and operational capacity to expand into power generation locally.
Amsons contends that its moves could accelerate Kenya’s push for more renewable energy, reduce dependence on imported fuel, and support regional energy integration under initiatives like Mission-300, aimed at powering 300 million Africans.
