PSRA opens audit on COTU’s 3-year guard fee deductions

NAIROBI, Kenya, April 22 – The Private Security Regulatory Authority (PSRA) has directed all private security firms to submit all private guard’s trade union fee deductions and remittances made to the Central Organization of Trade Unions (COTU) for the last three years.

Additionally, they have been required to submit all financial correspondence regarding the deductions and remittances of trade union fees.

The private security companies were warned by the authority that failure to comply with the new regulations would result in the cancellation of their registration and license.

“You are hereby directed to submit a schedule of all private security officers’ trade union fees deductions and remittances made to COTU for the last Thirty-Six (36) months from the date of this letter,” the Authority noted.

“Our team of auditors, led by Mr. Phillip Okello and Mr. Clinton Ingalula will be at hand to receive the documents to the Authority’s offices located at Lonrho House, 10th Floor,” it added.

PSRA is currently undertaking a forensic audit to investigate the collection and use of all finances that have been deducted from private security officers and remitted to COTU by the private security companies for the said period.

The authority claims that the move is intended to safeguard the rights and well-being of more than 1.3 million private security personnel nationwide.

This comes after the regulator previously ordered private security companies to cease deducting the guards’ monthly trade union fee payment contributions to COTU.

According to PSRA, the officers have been contributing between Sh150 and Sh600 to COTU, despite their low salaries and non-representation by the trade union body.
