NAIROBI, Kenya, Dec 7 – The annual Champions of Governance (CoG) Awards is set to go regional as the need for better service delivery and transparency surges within the East Africa Community.
This was revealed by Diana Sawe -chairperson for the Institute of Certified Secretaries of Kenya (ICS) during the 2022 Champions of Governance Awards which took place on Friday in Nairobi last week.
“We have conquered Kenya and it’s now time that we regionalize the awards so as to set a new trend within the East Africa region. This is the only way to attract more players from the public-private sector within this region,” said Sawe.
The ceremony saw CIC Insurance Group Limited emerge as the best overall winner of this year’s COG awards.
KenGen Staff Retirement Benefits Scheme was the first runners up while Safaricom Sacco Society Limited took the second runners up in the same category.
Jeremiah Karanja-chief executive officer of ICS-Kenya explained that the COG awards aim to foster good governance in both public and private sectors.
“The aim of this award is to promote good governance that will catalyst better service delivery to the people both in public and private sector. Over the years we have strived to enhance innovations in organizations that support good governance and also encourage organizations to focus on enhancement of good governance as way of scaling up their profitability,”said Karanja.
ICS Kenya in its strategic master plan aims to create a regional governance training institute.
“At the moment we are in discussion with players within the East African region to have a regional governance institute that will help us set the standards for other institutes within this region.We have also embarked on numerous research all aimed at ensuring that Kenya as a country has better governance systems that will drive good corporate services to the people,” said Sawe.
Nancy Kariuki-Chairperson of KASNEB who was the chief guest at the ceremony praised ICS-Kenya for striving for to develop a 360 governance curriculum.
“I believe the ICS-Kenya new curriculum is something that will set Kenya a part from the rest of the African states. I believe this new curriculum will enable us to foster good governance training at tertiary institutes.”
