Posta eyes new revenue stream in a deal with SasaPay

NAIROBI, Kenya, Oct 7 – The Postal Corporation of Kenya (PCK) is banking on a new online payment deal to increase its revenue stream.

PCK has partnered with SasaPay, a regulated online payment platform to launch a Posta App Pay and a USSD code that will allow it to receive money as well as make payments.

SasaPay agent shops will also be stationed at PCK’s over 600 branches countrywide, allowing customers to make deposits/withdrawals, pay utility bills, and buy airtimes.

“SasaPay and PCK are launching a joint partnership. The partnership will see the launch of Posta Pay App and USSD powered by Sasa Pay,”

“Sasa Pay will provide PCK with Wallet as a service (WaaS) to receive money as well as make payouts to their different customers within a regulated framework,” SasaPay said in a statement.

The loss-making parastatal will be betting on the deal to increase its revenue that has been hit hard by dwindling income from the traditional mail business.

Letter business has taken a hit from social media platform such as Facebook, Twitter, Gmail, among others, relegating traditional mail service usage.

Data from the Communication Authority of Kenya showed that the number of letters sent locally dropped gradually to stand at 9.6 million units in the quarter ended September 2020.

To counter this, Posta in partnership with Safaricom launched an online post service dubbed M-Post to enable clients use their phone numbers as postal addresses.

Customers pay a yearly fee of Sh300 that is way cheaper than Sh2,000 charged on a normal post office box for the same period.
