Mara launches free online academy to advance digital financial literacy

NAIROBI, Kenya, Sep 20 – Pan-African digital finance ecosystem, Mara has launched a free educational online platform that will steer blockchain and digital finance literacy.

The platform also aims to grow a community of wealth creators among its pioneer learners and help them manage their wealth and create a future African talent pipeline.

Through the academy, Mara intends to unlock learners’ potential and innovation through the curriculum which will embed a unique delivery model with its partners to offer highly skilled, multi-disciplinary technologists to non-traditional learners with equal access to upskilling, education and a clear path to global opportunities.

The academy whose design is Africa-centered will provide unlimited access to all the course resources including the instructor, videos, practice tests and capstone projects.

Even though it will accessible to all, it will focus on tapping more Africans to increase the adoption of digital finance and blockchain technology.

Speaking during the launch, Mara’s Co-Founder and Chief Executive Officer (CEO) Chi Nnadi said the programme aims to provide an opportunity for willing learners to learn skills that will help them access higher employment opportunities even as the Academy intends to build a continent that has a more equitable workforce in the digital economy.

“The prioritization of financial literacy in Africa is important and The Mara Academy offers quality education, resources and opportunities to enable them to gain the requisite skills needed to diversify our future workforce,” said Nnadi.

The Academy’s programme will consist of coursework on blockchain, developers and digital financial literacy as it seeks to help learners enjoy learning at their own pace, have a better understanding of savings and investment in blockchain and gain digital financial literacy.

The learners will also be exposed to education on budgeting, setting financial goals, investing and wealth management using digital tools.

“The education programme caters for anyone, anywhere and at any time. Through an innovative mix of delivery methods, partnerships and customizable content, we hope to meet people where they are and create communities of like-minded people not only involve in digital finance but cultivating shared interests,” said  Kate Kallot, Co-Founder and Chief Impact Officer at Mara.

Kallot further noted that the programme aims to go beyond the borders and create a tribe that will break the geographical, financial and technological barriers.

According to Statistics from ‘Global State of Crypto’ study carried out by Gemini in 2022, education remained to be the most significant global barrier to digital assets ownership even though there is a surge in usage of digital assets in Africa.

The study further found that 40 per cent of Africans are yet to purchase any digital assets due to a lack of trust, apprehension about price volatility and lack of understanding of how to purchase digital assets.

Mara’s educational content which will be accessed via the Academy’s online portal will cater to beginners, intermediates and those who are at advanced levels as well and learners will be issued with gold standard certificates upon completion of the courses.
