Moja Expressway in talks with govt to acquire land for CBD exit

NAIROBI, Kenya June 9-Moja Expressway is in talks with the government to acquire land in the Nairobi CBD to construct an exit at Haile Selassie to ease access into the CBD.

The firm is the operator of the Nairobi Expressway and a subsidiary of China Road and Bridge Corporation(CRBC).

Speaking to Capital Business, Moja Expressway Communication manager, Jeanne May said they had noticed that the excess traffic at the Museum Hill exit was due to the lack of a CBD exit.

The Nairobi Expressway was built to ease traffic for road users, as it takes 15 minutes to move from the Jomo Kenyatta International Airport to Westlands.

Even so, there have been instances of traffic jam on the new road as the operators struggle to find change for cash users who are the majority

Jeanne also urged Kenyans to get toll cards to ease the traffic.

“The other major cause of traffic along the exits is cash users as there is money exchanging hands, we urge Kenyans to get the Electronic Toll Collection(ETC) or the Manual Toll Collection(MTC) Service to ease the traffic,” she said

Currently, the ETC and MTC have 50,000 registered users.

For the ETC, one’s vehicle is installed with and On-board Unit(OBU) which is preloaded and when vehicles approach the toll station, the system is scanned, and motorists can drive through without stopping.

Kenyans can apply for the ETC service and book for an OBU device installation at https://nairobiexpressway.ke

In order to access the ETC service, users have to pay a minimum fee of Sh2,000 and a service charge of Sh1,000.

However, when a motorist pays Sh5,000 and above, the whole amount goes towards the toll points.

For MTC users, a minimum fee of Sh1,000 and a service charge of Ksh300 are required.

No M-Pesa payments are accepted.
