Kenyans asked to prepare for the worst, as Govt orders for immediate hiring of 6,000 medics

NAIROBI, Kenya, Apr 2 – The government has ordered for the immediate hiring of an additional 5,000 skilled health workers, an exercise that should be finalized within 7 days, to combat the coronavirus pandemic.

Health Cabinet Secretary Mutahi Kagwe has also asked level 4,5 and 6 hospitals to hire an additional 1,000 health workers to fight the pandemic that he said would probably get worse.

Kagwe announced the new measures when he revealed a jump in the number of coronavirus infections in the country to 110 and 2 new deaths, bringing the death toll number to 3.

“We have advertised these jobs and we urge applicants to complete the process by Wednesday next week,” he said.

The hiring is expected to increase the number of additional health workers by 6,000.

The government has also asked secondary schools with boarding facilities to start planning for any eventualities.

“We have asked headteachers, those in charge of preparation for foods to plan ahead,” he said.

Kagwe has also asked for the addition of 1,000 bed capacity as quarantine facilities in boarding schools and hospitals as a means of preparing for the pandemic.

“Fellow Kenyans, I cannot emphasize nor repeat enough that we take this matter seriously, and not wait until you know someone who has the virus to get serious. The next person could be you, the person who might die could be you,” he said.

Kagwe also warned of dire action against individuals who trivialize the government’s efforts to contain the spread of the virus.

This is amid reports that the presentation of the two recovered patients yesterday was a PR stunt.

Kagwe says it is regrettable and shocking that Kenyans would make fun out of the recovery story of Brenda Cherotich and Brian Orinda who were declared negative by doctors.
