NAIROBI, Kenya, Oct 23 – Kenya film commission has signed a memorandum understanding with Chinese digital television provider StarTimes to boost the audiovisual industry in the country in addition to empowering filmmakers by making it a rewarding venture.
Kenya Film Commission Chief Executive Timothy Owase said the partnership opens a broader market for local filmmakers to showcase their talent as well as help push the material across borders in the region.
At the same time, Owase encouraged filmmakers to explore technological advances available to fulfill audience needs.
“This platform ensures that content can traverse our boarders thus exerting a great sphere influence in the region,” he said.
His sentiments come ahead of the 9th Edition of the Kalasha International Film and TV Awards, which is an annual event by the Commission that celebrates exceptional talent in Film and TV.
The Commission has picked StarTimes ON, an online mobile application as a platform where the shortlisted films will be uploaded for viewing and public voting from 30th October to 30th November ahead of Awards.
StarTimes acting CEO Hanson Wang said the partnership will see the awards, for the very first time since inception, leverage on technology during the public screening and voting for the shortlisted films.
According to Wang, the firm will customize requisite interface on StarTimes ON for the shortlisted films for Kalasha International Film and TV Awards, which he says will open the awards beyond the Kenyan boarders while making the voting process very transparent.
