Truecaller crosses a million mark with paying subscribers

NAIROBI, Kenya Aug 28 – Truecaller said Tuesday it had crossed the 1 million paying subscribers globally, and has added a series of new features to its paid subscription service, Truecaller Premium, in what it described as a major milestone.

Rolled out globally, the premium subscription service will now incorporate several advanced and more powerful spam blocking feature that include automatically updating and blocking top spammers in your region. The spam-blocking features are currently available to Android users across all global markets of Truecaller.

This year, Truecaller said the app had grown its paying subscribers by 130 per cent out of which 20 per cent are premium users based in Africa. The application service identifies more than half a billion calls a month in this region, out of which 50 percent of SMS received are spam. In Kenya the application blocks and filters more than 7.5 million calls a 70 per cent increase compared to 2018 and 17 million spam SMSes which is a 21% increase compared to 2018 per month.

Zakaria Hersi, the Director of Partnerships in Africa at Truecaller, said the organization will continue to innovate on advanced features to make communication safe and efficient for their users. Truecaller recently launched a subscription service, Truecaller Premium Gold, that offers upgraded features under a gold-themed interface to empower customers by adding more value and unique branding to their profiles.

Premium users enjoy an ads-free experience, get notifications when someone view their profiles, they will be able to record important conversations and listen to them later though this service is not yet available for Android 9 and above platforms. These users will be able to send contact requests to people outside your network and enjoy a professional look when calling someone with a premium badge.

Speaking on the announcement, Alan Mamedi, CEO and co-founder, Truecaller said, “We are happy to see this growth, and it makes us proud that users value the benefits of our Premium features. We are also excited to announce these new upgrades that will help us add even more value to our growing Premium users and help them make their communication more safe and efficient.”

The spam-blocking features are available in Truecaller Premium, which is currently offered worldwide at an 80 per cent discount for the first 3 months globally for all new subscribers. In Kenya the cost of subscription is KES 102.01 per month.
