Emirates Economy, Experience a Journey in a Class of its Own

Emirates has an innovative new function on its app to allow customers to create bespoke playlists ahead of their flight and sync it to their seats once on board/CAPITAL FM

DUBAI, UAE, Apr 12 – Just last month, Emirates offered Kenyans a return ticket including a complementary hotel stay starting from Kshs 34,226.

In addition, being Kenyans who love bargains and discounts, your guess on how many of us took them up is as good as mine. Well, if you grabbed an economy class ticket here are some things you should know before your flight.

High-Sky entertainment
Expect to be wowed with the over 4000 on demand entertainment channels on ice, Emirates’ award-winning inflight entertainment system. For the first flight hours, I’d suggest watch a movie to lessen the hours you are awake. I had to contain my giggles as I watched the newly released Instant Family on channel 148. Moreover, you do not have to feel homesick as the airline recently added movies (channel 1750 – 1759) and music from Africa (channel 5180 – 5280) on the 16:9 screen. It is so ironic that the wines cart stopped next to me while I was listening to Yvonne Chaka Chaka’s Umqombothi on Channel 5186.

Service with a smile from 150 different countries
Recognizable for their red hats and lipstick, the Emirates cabin crew who will serve you on board have an infectious smile and homeliness that will put you at ease. With over 22,000 cabin crew members from 135 nationalities, Emirates vibrant cabin crew will look after your well-being while delivering a memorable flight.

Fine dining in the sky
Culinary pleasures await you in the skies with meals that are specifically made to cater for different passengers’ palates. The airline tries it best to curate meals based on the route it is flying using fresh, locally sourced ingredients. As a foodie, I must say our dinner was very nutritious. We had chickpea salad as a starter which I must Google the recipe. We had two options for the main course between the chicken ragout and lamb curry. I settled for the lamb as red meat rules my world. My sweet tooth was finally satiated with the vanilla mousse.

Room for some legwork
While the five-hour trip from Nairobi to Dubai is not a long one, legroom is important to avoid swollen feet and other small complications related to immobility for a long period. The wonderfully upholstered seats on the Emirates B777 – 300 are well spaced with just enough width between you and your neighbour.

Baggage is welcome
Rob Liano once said “Everyone has baggage, maybe we should help each other carry it” and this is exactly what Emirates promises. All Economy travellers have a two-luggage allowance of up to 35 kilograms each and a hand luggage of seven kilograms. I just hope I do not go overboard with the weight after my day of shopping in Dubai.
