NAIROBI, Kenya, Mar 6 – Hundreds of passengers are stranded at the Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (JKIA) after the Kenya Aviation Workers Union went on strike Tuesday evening.
Kenya Airways advised passengers with scheduled flights from 11 am onwards not to go to the airport until further notice.
“Further to the strike by KAWU members, we expect disruptions on flights…we sincerely apologize for any inconvenience caused,” said Kenya Airways on Twitter.
The strike is linked to the planned takeover of JKIA by Kenya Airways in a joint partnership arrangement with the Kenya Airports Authority.

An undated strike notice signed by the Kenya Aviation Workers Union (KAWU) Secretary Moss Ndiema states that the Union has issued a seven-day strike notice from date herein.
“The reason for the strike action is the mismanagement of the aviation sector,” said Ndiema.
Kenya Airports Authority, however, said in a statement that the strike is illegal with Labour Cabinet Secretary Ukur Yatani insisting there is a court injunction against the strike.

“We are currently taking measures to ensure normalcy returns as soon as possible and that service interruption are minimized. We advise all passengers using JKIA to get in touch with their respective airlines to confirm their travel arrangements,” read part of the KAA statement.
Flights from and to Mombasa and Kisumu are also affected.
