, NAKURU, Kenya Sep 9 – Regional retailer, Tusker Mattresses, has kicked off a long term social and economic impact initiative, geared at improving the plight of disadvantaged communities.

The project, which was launched in Nakuru County today, dubbed: ‘Tuskys in The Community’ is designed to celebrate the legacy of the Late Tusker Mattresses Founder, Mzee Joram Kamau and will be rolled out an at estimated cost of Sh30 Million.

The initiative will prioritise programmes in areas of education and early childhood development among others.

Living to the charity begins at home mantra and in memory of Mzee Kamau’s passion for academic excellence, Tusker Mattresses has undertaken an extensive restoration of Lengenet Primary School in Rongai. All the classrooms at the Lengenet Primary School- where Mzee Kamau’s children first attended school- have been rehabilitated and equipped with new desks and related educational materials in a detailed makeover.

Today, Tusker Mattresses Directors, led by Chairman Dr. John Kago Kamau presided over a colorful function organized to formally handover the firm’s donation of learning aids and related educational materials at Lengenet Primary School. The event was preceded by an inter-denominational thanks giving service at Tuskys Imani Branch, in Nakuru Town.

Speaking during the event, Tusker Mattresses Group CEO Dan Githua said the firm would continue rolling out the Tuskys in The Community initiative as a sustainable joint community impact programme featuring Tuskys staff, suppliers and customers wishing to make a difference.

The Tuskys in The Community initiative, Githua added is geared at providing a platform to meaningfully connect further with our customers beyond business by touching their lives and alleviating social and economic challenges.

“As an organization, we are investing more than Sh 30million to kick off the Tuskys in The Community platform which will afford us a structured path to make a difference in the society,” Githua said and added, “Through the initiative, we shall be living the values left behind by our founder Mzee Joram Kamau.”

The Tuskys in The Community’ initiative will also be staged in other regions in the country namely including; Nyanza, Coast, Thika and Meru.

The retail chain traces its roots to early 1983 when the late Mzee Joram Kamau decided to venture into business, having sold his prized bull to raise capital to start up Gitwe General Stores, which was located in the small hamlet town of Rongai, in Nakuru District.

The expansion of Mzee Kamau’s business was gradual yet steady as he later opened Jolly Grocers and Magic superstores which had a branch both in Nakuru and Nairobi.

The 1990s saw the opening of the first Tusker Mattresses Limited Store. A couple of years later, the chain was rebranded Tuskys Supermarkets following the merger of Tusker Mattresses Limited and Magic Superstores.

From its humble beginnings, the late Mzee Joram Kamau built the business steadily and today the firm employs more than 6000 employees with a complement of more than 800 direct suppliers.
