Chandarana to open first shop in Kisumu after Uchumi exit

KISUMU, Kenya, Sep 13 – Chandarana Foodplus Supermarket is set to open its first outlet in Kisumu expanding its footprint beyond the Capital, Mombasa and Eldoret.

Chandarana will be moving in at the space formerly occupied by Uchumi at West End Mall along state lodge road after the later fell behind in rent payments leading to its exit in May this year.

While Chandarana Supermarket company officials have not yet indicated when the branch will be open for business, contractors have started rebranding the space formerly occupied by Uchumi.

“Just have a look, everybody is busy, painters, welders and others are really working hard to finish up the job on time. But the exact date of opening, I can’t tell,” said one painter.

As of February 2018, Chandarana had 14 branches, 11 in Nairobi, 2 in Mombasa, Diani and South Coast and 1 in Rupa Mall in Eldoret.

A number of supermarkets have in the recent past expanded to the lakeside city of Kisumu with the latest being Lemigo Dala Supermarket owned and operated by former Nakumatt employees.

Supermarket branches with footprints in the city includes, Tuskys, Nakumatt, Choppies, Lemigo, Naivas, Khetias, Tumaini and other small superstores penetrating into the estates.
