Kenya Railways appoints acting MD after suspension of Maina on graft charges

The Corporation’s Managing Director Atanus Maina is accused of failing to protect public property leading to the loss of Sh221.3 million/FILE

NAIROBI, Kenya, Aug 17 – Kenya Railways Business Research General Manager Philip Mainga has been appointed as acting Managing Director of Kenya Railways Corporation (KR)  after suspension of Atanas Maina.

Maina is among those suspended over the irregular payments of SGR compensation. Others include National Land Commission chair Prof Mohammed Swazuri, KR Surveyors Victor Wahome and Elijah Mwenda among others

Maina was accused of failing to protect public property hence leading to the loss of Sh221.3 million.

He also faced an alternative count of neglect of duty.

On Monday, the accused persons were granted Sh3 million surety bonds in addition to a requirement that they deposit their passports in court and keep off public offices.

Swazuri was however granted Sh6 million surety bond with the option of a Sh3.5mn cash bail.

Meanwhile, the Kenya Ports Authority Board will advertise the recruitment of the new Managing Director in the next two weeks.

 “We are looking for a private consultant to do the recruitment,” said Transport Cabinet Secretary James Macharia.
