Nanjira Sambili appointed to the UN High-level Panel on Digital Cooperation

Sambili is currently the Digital Equality Advocacy Manager at the World Wide Web Foundation

NAIROBI, Kenya, Jul 13 – The United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres has appointed Kenyan researcher, policy analyst and advocacy strategist Nanjira Sambili to the newly established high-level panel on Digital Cooperation.

The panel which was established on Thursday will be Co-chaired by Melinda Gates and Jack Ma.

The panel on Digital Cooperation was convened to advance proposals that will strengthen cooperation in the digital space among Governments, the private sector, civil society, international organizations, technical and academic communities and other relevant stakeholders.

The team is expected to raise awareness about the transformative impact of digital technologies across society and the economy, and contribute to the broader public debate on how to ensure a safe and inclusive digital future for all, taking into account relevant human rights norms.

Sambili is currently the Digital Equality Advocacy Manager at the World Wide Web Foundation, where she leads advocacy efforts to promote digital equality in access to and use of the Web, with a particular focus on the Foundation’s Women’s Rights Online work.

She previously worked at the iHub in Nairobi, where she provided strategic guidance for growth of technology innovation research in the East Africa region.

“Stoked to have been asked by United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres to serve on the High Level Panel on Digital Cooperation. Looking forward to working with the co-chairs, Melinda Gates and Jack Ma, along with the other eminent panelists on this,” Sambili commented on her appointment.

She is also a member of DFID’s Digital Advisory Panel, board member at IRIN News, UK Citizens Online Democracy (mySociety) and Digitally Responsible Aid and served as a deputy on the United Nations High Level Panel for Women’s Economic Empowerment.

“Cooperation across domains and across borders is critical to realizing the transformational potential of digital technologies, while safeguarding against risks and unintended consequences,” she added.
