Counterfeit power cables worth Sh50m seized in Mombasa, 5 suspects arrested

MOMBASA, Kenya, Jun 8 – A Multi-Agency team has seized three containers loaded with counterfeit and concealed power cables.

Kenya Revenue Authority Southern Regional Coordinator, Nicholas Kinoti, has said the three containers, estimated to be worth Sh50 million, were seized at three Container Freight Stations in Mombas.

The three CFSs are Console Base, Auto Port and Portside.

Kinoti said five people, who are associated with the importation of the containers have already been arraigned in court.

“We have already taken five people to court to answer for the offences even as more investigations are ongoing. Two more people are still at large,” said Kinoti.

The counterfeit cables are labeled East African Cables and Coast Cable Company.

They also had labels indication, ‘Made in Kenya.’

They were shipped from China by Felgit International Limited, Revelation Global Logistics and Almiftah Investment Limited.

KRA said the cargo owners had contracted Sunrise Investment Group, Ultimate Clearing and Forwarding and Safe Landing Logistics Ltd.

East African Cables Managing Director Paul Muigai had on Thursday said the company loses Sh3 billion every year due to counterfeit and fake cables mainly shipped from China.
