Charcoal prices push inflation to 3.95pc in May

The Government banned logging in February this year in the wake of a rapidly decreasing forest cover. 

NAIROBI, Kenya, May 31 – Inflation in May marginally increased to 3.95 percent compared to 3.73 percent in April on higher food and charcoal prices.

Kenya National Bureau of Statistics figures shows the prices of cooking fuels especially charcoal increased highest at 9.66 percent due to the ban on logging.

A 4-kilogram bag of charcoal now costs Sh135 shillings compared to Sh123 in April and Sh81 in May 2017.

The Government banned logging in February this year in the wake of a rapidly decreasing forest cover.

KNBS Director General Zachary Mwangi says food and Non-Alcoholic Drinks’ Index increased by 1.35 percent.

“However, food inflation increased from 0.26 percent in April 2018 to 0.34 percent in May 2018,” says Mwangi.

Transport index increased by 0.10 percent mainly on account of increase in the pump price of petrol which outweighed the decrease in diesel prices.
