Kenya’s mobile commerce transactions value hit Sh1.1trillion

Data from the Communication Authority of Kenya shows that a mobile commerce transaction value in the previous quarter was at Sh714.3 billion/FILE

NAIROBI, Kenya, Apr 13 – Kenya’s mobile commerce transactions value hit Sh1.1 trillion on December 31, 2017, growing by 53 percent compared to the previous quarter that ended in September 2017.

Data from the Communication Authority of Kenya shows that a mobile commerce transaction value in the previous quarter was at Sh714.3 billion.

However, despite the growth in transaction value, transaction numbers declined from 352.4 million in the previous quarter to 308.6 million transactions as at December 2017.

Active mobile money transfer subscriptions and agents stood at 30.0 million up and 198,234 respectively in the period under review.

This is up from 28.1 million money transfer subscriptions and 184,537 respectively
A total of 607.4 million mobile money transfer transactions valued at Sh1.763 trillion were carried in the period.

Safaricom’s M-PESA had the highest number of mobile money transfer transactions at 493 million with those transactions worth Sh1.4 trillion followed by Equity Bank’s Equitel which has 110 million transactions that had Sh306 million in the period under review.
