Kenyan firm invests Sh30Mn on e-commerce platform to rival Jumia

Orion Online Mall Chief Executive Peter Wangai says there is still a big opportunity in the online market space.

NAIROBI, Kenya, Apr 5 – Kenyan firm Goldenscape Group has invested Sh30 million in an online shopping platform set to rival Jumia Kenya.

The platform dubbed Orion Online Mall is already live with products that include smartphones, digital smart TVs, Laptops and Desktops as well as computer and Printer Accessories.

Chief Executive Peter Wangai says there are also plans to introduce groceries, as well as food delivery to the platform.

The move comes even as other retailers eye the increasing number of online customers.

Orion Online Mall is also entering a segment that has experienced exponential growth over the last two years where both traditional and digital outlets have been pushing their online stores.

Deacons is investing about Sh10 million in a digital platform while retailers such as Uchumi and Naivas have also entered the e-commerce space.

“Through our new platform, we have plans to target young customers whose life is predominantly on the phone. There is a huge opportunity in this business, we are planning to bring delivery spaces throughout the country,” he explained.

The firm’s platform will have a tracking system where customers can track where their goods are at any given point until they are delivered.

In January the firm opened a Sh2.9 million grocery store in Nairobi.

The firm, which operates 500 greenhouses across the country, is now selling organic foods and vegetables directly to the consumer at a new store in Kilimani.
