Nairobi Governor donates Sh1.2Mn to Shauri Moyo traders

NAIROBI, Kenya, Nov 24 – Nairobi  City County Governor Mike Sonko has donated Sh1.2 million to 49 Shauri Moyo – Jogoo Road small-scale traders who incurred over Sh 5 million loss after their businesses were looted by a rowdy crowd following the return of NASA leader Raila Odinga from the US on Friday.  

During the meeting held at City Hall on Thursday, the Governor also offered to clear the hospital bill for one of the victims who was sexually assaulted by a section of the protestors who also made away with over Sh200,000 from her M-pesa shop.

“I have donated that money so that traders whose businesses were destroyed or looted can get back to their feet and continue earning their living and those who were involved in destroying people’s property the law will catch up with you,” said Sonko.

Out of Sh 1.2 million which was personal donation from the Governor, Sh 1 million was to be shared among the 48 traders and Sh 200,000 to the molested trader who is currently undergoing treatment at the Nairobi Women Hospital.

Speaking on behalf of the affected, Ochudo Achieng’, a shop owner at Bama-Shauri Moyo thanked the Governor for offering the affected traders financial support irrespective of their political or ethnic background.

Sonko has urged the traders not to allow perceived political differences to divide them.

He also pledged more financial support to the victims.
