NAIROBI, Kenya, May 9 – Three Kenyan bank leaders have been nominated for the 2017 African Banker of the Year Awards.

The nominees are Barclays Bank Managing Director Jeremy Awori, Equity Bank Group Managing Director and CEO James Mwangi and KCB Group CEO Joshua Oigara.

Others on the list include Nigeria’s GTB Bank’s Managing Director Segun Agbaje, Tanzania’s CRDB Bank’s Managing Director Dr Charles Kimei and Afreximbank President Dr Benedict Oramah.

Equity has been nominated in the ‘Best Retail Bank’ category while the KCB Foundation and East African Development Bank have been nominated for the ‘Socially Responsible Bank of The Year.’

Kenyan banks, however, missed recognition in various categories that include the African Bank of the year category, investment bank of the year, the financial inclusion award and the innovation in banking award

Chair of the Awards Committee, Omar Ben Yedder said there was a competitive entry into financial inclusion, innovation and social responsibility categories which he said signifies how the banking sector, in general, is responding to the challenges that are facing the continent and the role they are playing in driving the continent’s transformation.

“Given difficult trading conditions across many African countries, we expected a slowdown across the banking sector in Africa. We were pleasantly surprised to see that the financial services sector have managed to maintain on the whole positive developments,” Yedder said.

The Awards, which are hosted by the African Banker Magazine, will be held during the Annual Meeting of the African Development Bank on May 23rd in Ahmedabad in India.
