NAIROBI, Kenya, Apr 25 – Safaricom customers will from Wednesday midnight to Thursday midnight send money for free via M-PESA following Monday’s outage.
Safaricom Chief Executive Bob Collymore says the gesture is a way of apologising to customers who were affected during the outage that saw consumers unable to receive calls or text messages while data and M-PESA services were interrupted.
Collymore has assured that all their services are now fully restored.
He says the outage was caused by two traffic outlets which failed rapidly one after the other.
However, the zero rating on M-PESA charges is for person to person transactions for registered M-PESA customers, Safaricom has clarified.
The outage affected over 27 million Safaricom customers and millions more connected through the M-PESA platform including KCB M-PESA and CBA’s MShwari.
“I truly appreciate our customers’ patience and understanding as we worked to resolve the issue and sincerely thank you for staying connected to Safaricom,” Collymore explained.
