Sports betting, Two Rivers Mall top Kenya’s Google searches in Feb

NAIROBI, Kenya, Mar 3 –  Two Rivers Mall, the largest shopping mall in Sub-Saharan Africa, outside South Africa that opened its doors on this year’s Valentine’s Day was the second most trending search after betting sites that dominated February searches.

“Betting craze continues to develop among Kenyans even as the National Assembly, through Gem Legislator, Hon. Jakoyo Midiwo attempted to legislate on gambling, gaming and lotteries without much success,” the report indicates.

Some of the betting sites that dominated this month’s searches are: Sportpesa,  Elitebet, Adbet, Betin, Betika, Kwikbet and Betway.

The mall attracted over 150, 000 visitors in the week of its launch owing to a beehive of activities for shoppers attracted to various local and international brands-including Carrefour and Global Fashion retailer LC Waikiki which opened the first Sub-Saharan Africa store at the Mall.

The former Governor of Nyeri County, Nderitu Gachagua came in third, after he passed on at the age of 64 while undergoing treatment in London while Gospel Songstress Eunice Njeri, who annulled her marriage to fellow US-based gospel musician Isaac Bukasa less than 24 hours after she walked down the aisle, came in fourth.

“Valentine’s took the fifth position and many also looked for Valentines Quotes to share with their loved ones. Valentine’s Day, also called Saint Valentine’s Day or the Feast of Saint Valentine, is an annual holiday celebrated on February 14 where people show love and appreciation to their loved ones including spouses, family, friends etc,” the report notes.

National carrier, Kenya Airways took the tenth position in the list driven by the announcement by the Kenya Civil Aviation Authority that The United States Government had granted Kenya “Category One Status” which meant that airline operators, both in Kenya and the US will now be allowed to carry on operations.

Other trending searches were: Big Kev – founder of Tru Blaq Events who has been battling with the brain tumor for approximately 10 years. He suffered blindness after undergoing a surgical procedure in late 2016, and in February, players in the entertainment industry organised an event to raise funds to cater for his treatment.

Kenya’s love for sports was demonstrated by search for football leagues such as European Premier League (EPL), which made it to the most trending searches.
