, NAIROBI, Kenya, Jun 29 – Government officials are expected to use the national carrier Kenya Airways when travelling starting 1st July.

The move is in a bid to support the national carrier, said Najib Balala who was speaking during the unveiling the Magical Kenya Branding on KQ’s Dreamliner.

“Starting 1st July, government officials must travel with Kenya Airways. Cabinet has made the decision and implementation begins Friday. Look at countries such as Britain, its government officials always use British Airways, which communicates loyalty. If we are therefore asking people to buy Kenya, us as government must lead by example and buy Kenya,” said the CS.

Balala also applauded Kenya Airways for the recovery measures they have taken so far. He however asked them to further work on improving their services to enhance customer experience especially at the Jomo Kenyatta International Airport.

“It takes less than 20 minutes to check out in many international airports while it takes an hour at JKIA. Please work on this.”

At the same time, KQ Chief Executive Officer Mbuvi Ngunze announced that the airline will start flying to Cape Town via Livingstone come Friday, a move that will see the carrier enhance its tourism offering especially on the continent.

According to Ngunze, the new destination is part of a strategy to stimulate traffic growth that has in turn given the carrier positive results.

Despite an increase in the number of destinations in Africa, the company has enhanced its connectivity by increasing 35 flights per week to its destinations across the continent.

“Kenya Airways and Jambojet have stimulated domestic traffic growth by more than 25 percent year on year in the last two years. This is really what has been sustaining traffic growth especially in Mombasa,” Ngunze said.

Additionally, the potential of KQ flights to connect and cross sell has improved by 20 percent year on year, owing to the new hub structure meant to offer more connection points.

This follows President Uhuru Kenyatta’s push for a review of the bilateral air services agreements between Kenya and Botswana earlier this week, which allows Kenya Airways to fly to Gaborone three times a week.
