Messaging app Viber has turned-on new security features that will give users an additional layer of security. Viber announced it is rolling out end-to-end encryption and a hidden chat capability globally including an expanded deleting function.

“We have been working on this for a long time and are proud that our users can confidently user Viber without fear of their messages being intercepted,” said Viber in a statement.

The features extend to one-to-one or group message, on a call, on desktop, mobile or tablet.

The app gives it’s over 700 million users across the globe ability to connect via free calls and messages. Viber users can send free photo messages, video messages and HD-quality calls.

Users will have to update to the latest version of Viber to get a notification when conversations are encrypted. A grey padlock will appear on the screen to confirm you are secured. The new features apply across Android, iOs, PCs and Mac desktops.

Viber has also added a feature that enables users to mark contacts as ‘trusted’. The lock color changes to green after authentication of a contact.

“Additionally, we’ve ensured each user has an individual cryptography key associated with his or her device, allowing you to benefit from an added layer of security.”

The hidden chat feature allows users to protect private data from third parties in the event devices are shared. Viber says the hidden chats feature is meant to conceal private chats from prying eyes.

“A lot of our users share tablets with their families, have personal chats while at work or plan surprises for loved ones and want to protect conversations from wandering eyes…we believe that protecting privacy isn’t synonymous with protecting private data from hackers in cyberspace,” says Viber.

Additionally, Viber allows users to disable ‘seen’ or online status, a feature that adds more privacy and that is not available in most messaging apps. However, this feature can only be turned on/off once every 24 hours. You can also opt to turn off message notifications or bundle up notification from a continuous stream of chats.

Viber’s Public Chats allows users to connect with their favorite personalities, bands, sports celebrities and presenters. You can explore and see which personalities are vibing, and you can get the latest on what’s on happening in their world by just following them.

You can follow a handful of personalities in Africa including CapitalFM’s Late Night presenter Chao Tolle. www.viber.com/chao
