Blinds or drapes? Thick curtains or sheer drapes? The more choices there are, the easier it is to get confused and be lost for choice. When making decisions with regards to windows and curtains, you need to have in mind exactly what you are after, is it light or style or both? Next to paint, curtains and blinds can transform any space by adding color and ambience. Here’s a few tips to help you along.
Colour and Fabric
Fabric is an essential part of choosing curtains, since the material will dictate how well your curtains function and hold up over time. It would be wise to pleat the curtains like an accordion at the top and let them drape.
Sunlight will fade fabrics over time. If the room gets a lot of light, it’s smart to avoid bright colors, since they tend to fade faster. Still, if you like to change out your rooms often, you can be less concerned with fading. Go with neutral colors, since they’re less likely to fade and more likely to blend into a room’s decor. Some fabrics can help keep out the cold.
Length and Lining
Before you start with the measuring, decide how high you would like the curtains to hang. For a more traditional look, with the curtain slightly puddled on the floor, you’ll want to add another two or three inches to your length. For a modern, crisp look, have the panel fall flush with the floor.
Off-the-shelf vs Custom Made.
The beauty of having curtains custom made is that you will have your specifications and create a tailored look, much like a custom made suit. If custom made curtain are not in your budget, you might want to spend slightly more on high quality fabrics.
Well at the end of the day, you want to create a look for your house that reflects your personality as a decorator and really brings out the best features of your house.
