M-PESA Foundation to construct academy in Kiambu

We as government are happy to see these kinds of initiatives as they redefine our economic growth and provide new opportunities to the disadvantaged,” said Deputy President William Ruto.

NAIROBI, Kenya, May 5 – The M-PESA Foundation is set to construct a state of the art, mixed boarding high school that will seek to provide a first class, unique education to gifted but economically disadvantaged children from all counties in Kenya.

The facility will boast first class sports, arts and cultural facilities, in addition to academic facilities and will include an indoor sports hall, a sports field, running track, swimming pools, squash courts, a music centre and a 500 seat auditorium.

The admission process kicks off from May to November targeting 80 students entering Form One in January 2016, with a progressive increment in subsequent years that will see the Academy take in up to 700 students over the next five years.

“The M-PESA Foundation has made some significant investments in existing educational institutions but investing in infrastructure alone is not a sustainable way of investing in education. We want to extend our impact by actively influencing the way that education is delivered,” said Michael Joseph, M-PESA Foundation Chairman.

Beyond preparing students to excel in KCSE, the M-PESA Foundation Academy will redesign subjects taught so that they are delivered in diverse and excitable ways. It will equip the students with the skills and knowledge to seamlessly enter tertiary education or embark on their own business ventures.

“This investment by the M-PESA foundation, will rewrite the future of Corporate Social Investment. We as government are happy to see these kinds of initiatives as they redefine our economic growth and provide new opportunities to the disadvantaged,” said Deputy President William Ruto.

The Foundation will continue to invest in large scale and transformative projects that have the power to impact Kenyan lives as it celebrates its fifth anniversary.
