The new rail transport system is expected to create 60,000 direct jobs and a further 200,000 indirect jobs.
The President was taken on a tour of the project by Transport Cabinet Secretary Michael Kamau, the PS Nduva Muli and managers of China Roads and Bridges.
He was also accompanied by Cabinet Secretaries Joseph Nkaissery (Internal Security), Davis Chirchir (Energy), Charity Ngilu (Lands and Housing) and Judy Wakhungu (Environment).
President Kenyatta will later address a public rally at the Kenya Wildlife Service Camp at Mtito Ndei together with local leaders.
