Review: Asus Transformer Book T100

asus transformer

The idea of having a tablet that transforms to a laptop is pretty cool especially if the tablet is detachable from the keyboard. Portability and flexibility is assured and this is what Asus was going for with the Transformer Book T100. The 10-inch Windows 8.1 tablet is just the right size to use as a tablet or as a notebook when connected to the keyboard. However, for most conventional users, it takes a bit of time to get used to the 2-in-1 format but comes handy for people on the go weighing only 1.2 kgs.

The Transformer Book T100 comes with Intel processor Atom Z3740, 2GB RAM and 64GB storage, which should be okay for an average user. The 1366 x 768-piexel display favors the Windows 8.1 as it brings out the sharp contrast. However, using touch on the Windows tablet can be a bit awkward for first time Windows 8 users.

In terms of design and form, the Transformer’s largely plastic casing contributes to its relatively light weight. The downside is that the tablet is a bit heavier than the keyboard, so it tends to flip when tilted past a certain angle. The keyboard has details of metal with a matt finish at the bottom, securing the grip for the user. It helps that gorilla glass protects the screen from scratches.

The slim keyboard is packed with a USB 3.0 allowing users to plug a mouse or an external hard. There is a 2-megapixel camera but no rear-facing camera. Going for Sh49,000 in the market, the Asus Transformer T100 offers a fair amount of specs compared to other gadgets in the category.

Asus is banking on the hybrid category to boost their PC market share and it seems to be working. Gartner research shows the Taiwanese company shipped 2.2 million PCs compared to 1.7 million units in the same period last year in the EMEA region.
