Kisumu widows urged to group for loans

KISUMU-WIDOWSNAIROBI, Kenya, Dec 26 – Widows and the vulnerable in Kisumu County were encouraged to form groups that can enable them access loans and improve their lives on Thursday.

Nominated Senator in charge of women affairs, Joy Gwendo, said it has been proven that women who organise themselves into such groups change their lives.

“Women are very good at saving money and this is a chance for women to be changing the world.”

“If they collect money, save it and loan it when there is a need making themselves self reliant.”

“Widows are the most affected by genuine issues that only money can address and they will support other widows at the same time,” she explained.

Gwendo observed that through such groups, they can be involved in table banking where they will be able to give revolving loans to members’ who can then start businesses to uplift themselves.

Speaking in Ahero where she met the Nyando Deanery St Monica’s Widows, Gwendo urged the government needs to come up with other initiatives aimed at improving the widows’ lives after losing their bread winners.

Kisumu Governor Jack Ranguma who was at the ceremony announced that his county government is also committed to giving financial support to such organized groups.

President Uhuru Kenyatta last month urged Parliament to speed up the law that will govern the Uwezo Fund arguing that the delay is holding up the disbursement of the funds.

“This money was already budgeted for about six months ago. And we are yet to come up with a legislation that will guide this Fund. There are so many wrangles about who will be involved and who should not,” he argued.

“But what do we need the regulations for and we can see a working model? Let us just follow the working model.”

Deputy President William Ruto added that the money borrowing concept from the group should be transferred to the rest of the country because it would create tremendous opportunities for women and youths.

The groups patron and Deputy President’s wife Rachael Ruto said, “This organisation has brought women together and has given opportunity to women with no access to credit to get money and do business.

“Women who never had a chance to earn dividends are now earning dividends like the shareholders of big companies.”
