New taxes bite as fuel prices go up

PETROL-STATION-QUEUENAIROBI, Kenya, Aug 14 – The price of Super petrol will shoot up by Sh2.74 in Nairobi for the next one month, retailing at Sh112.26 a litre as diesel goes up by Sh1.58 to Sh104.44 in the latest review announced Wednesday by the Energy Regulatory Commission (ERC).

A litre of kerosene has gone up with the highest margin of Sh4.44 per litre to retail at Sh83.93 in Nairobi.

The commission attributed the price increase to the 1.5 percent new import levy for railway development, which was factored into pump price computation.

“In the same period, the mean monthly US dollar to Kenya shilling deteriorated by 1.53 percent from Sh85.65 per dollar in June 2013 to Sh86.96 in July,” the commission said in a statement on Wednesday.

In Mombasa, super petrol will retail at Sh109, diesel at Sh101.21 and kerosene at Sh81.14.

In the Northern Kenya town of Mandera, residents will buy the commodity at the highest prices with a litre of super petrol going for Sh124.78 a litre, diesel at Sh116.96 and kerosene at Sh96.45.

Nakuru residents will buy a litre of super of petrol at Sh112.85, diesel at Sh105.25 and kerosene at Sh84.69 while in Kisumu super petrol will retail at Sh114.02 a litre, diesel at Sh106.42 and kerosene at Sh85.72.

Eldoret residents will part with slightly less than their Kisumu counterparts for a litre of super petrol retailing at Sh113.96, diesel at Sh106.36 and kerosene at Sh85.72.

The commission maintains an SMS-based inquiry system for petroleum prices where the public can obtain the latest petroleum prices in major towns by sending a short message to 0707 667623.

“Consumers are also requested to be vigilant in reporting non-compliant retailers to the authorities for necessary legal action. The commission has installed a hotline (0708 444000),” ERC said.
