NAIROBI, Kenya, Feb 15 – Nakumatt Holdings has returned to the fast growing Thika Road hamlet with the opening of a Sh400 million store.

The new Nakumatt Thika Road Supermarket that opened its doors Friday is located at the ultra-modern Thika Road Mall and covers a shopping floor space of 80,000 square feet.

The store features Kenya’s first integrated touch screen check out tills, a moving walk (travelator) and a variety of energy saving retail fittings and solutions imported from Italy.

Speaking during the opening, Nakumatt Holdings Managing Director Atul Shah disclosed that the opening of the firm’s 39th branch sets the stage for the opening of five new branches across the region this year.

As part of Nakumatt’s corporate expansion strategy, Shah explained that the firm will be investing more than Sh1 billion this year in the roll-out of new branches in both Kenya and Uganda. The on-going expansion drive will also focus on the upgrading of existing branches to enhance the stores ambience, layout and product variety.

“The year 2013 promises to be a busy year for Nakumatt as we prepare to open at least five more branches in Uganda and Kenya as part of our expansion strategy. We shall continue investing heavily in our bid to maintain exceptional customer service standards,” Shah explained.

“The opening of these branches also confirms our underlying confidence in the regional economies and the positive prospects for world class retail solutions; which we are now setting out to address.

During the opening of Nakumatt Thika Road, shoppers who thronged the new store enjoyed a variety of rewards and price discounts to mark the stores grand opening.

The energy saving solutions installed and running at Nakumatt Thika road will also help transform the new store into one of the most energy efficient retail outlets in Kenya with up to 25 percent energy cost savings.

Following the conclusion of a successful pilot project at Nakumatt Malindi, the new Nakumatt Thika Road has now been fitted with a number of energy saving solutions such as Freezers, Chillers, Air Dispersion Units and Lighting systems that are some of the notable high energy consuming elements in the retail sector.
