Add value to coffee and reap more – Kibaki

KIBAKINYERI, Kenya, Feb 9 – President Mwai Kibaki has urged coffee cooperative societies in the country to adopt the best technologies and practices that can reduce cost in production, processing and packaging and add value to their products to improve farmers’ earnings.

President Kibaki said with international coffee prices shooting up in recent years and the trend looking to hold, the government will do everything possible to ensure farmers reaped maximum benefits from their crops.

Addressing a roadside rally in Othaya town after touring Gatuyaini Coffee Mill managed by Othaya Farmers’ Cooperative Society, the Head of State observed that through value addition, the benefits from improved world coffee prices will trickle down to the farmers.

President Kibaki said: “Value addition along the coffee chain will enable the farmers to not only produce but also get involved in milling and roasting of the produce.”

The president at the same time warned unscrupulous coffee traders applying crude competition methods that the government was monitoring their activities and would deal with them firmly.

He added that the government will support all initiatives by cooperative societies and farmers to add value to their cash crops.

President Kibaki who is on a two day tour of development projects in Nyeri South Sub-County also visited the Aberdare forest and Iria-ini Community Centre funded by the Othaya Constituency Development Fund (CDF).

Addressing the public at Iria-ini Community Centre, the Head of State expressed appreciation to the Othaya CDF committee for proper utilization of public funds.

He noted that the committee had ensured that the CDF funds set aside by parliament were spent for the intended purpose.

President Kibaki was accompanied by senior civil servants led by Head of Public Service and Secretary to Cabinet Francis Kimemia and leaders in Nyeri South Sub-County.
