Speaking during the opening of the official residence of the country’sVice President at Karen in Nairobi, President Mwai Kibaki noted that more funds have been committed towards improving infrastructure in the country.
“This project underlines one of the foundations of our Vision 2030 which is to ensure there is adequate infrastructure that will enable our country to attain middle income status with a high quality of life for its citizens,” he said.
Apart from vastly improving the road network in the country, Kibaki stated that various infrastructural projects have been undertaken under the Economic Stimulus Programme to facilitate growth and development in every corner of the country.
He emphasised that the government had also put up classrooms in every constituency to improve education and constructed fresh produce markets to improve the marketing of agricultural products.
“We have also put up jua kali sheds to boost the informal sector and built more health centers to enhance healthcare and bring medical services closer to the people,” he added.
He highlighted other ongoing landmark projects in the country, including the expansion of judiciary infrastructure across the country to facilitate faster dispensation of justice to the public and expansion of institutions of higher learning.
Kibaki revealed that 77 new district headquarters are being constructed across the country, more than half of which are complete and already in use.
He added that the few new district headquarters buildings still under construction will be completed and in use before the devolved governments begin their operations.
The Head of State also commended the Ministry of Public Works staff for their dedication and hard work and the role they continue to play in completion of development projects in the country.
With regard to the official residence of the Vice President, he observed that the complex, which has a comprehensive office block, brings together all staff working in the Vice President’s office.
The president said the government took the strategic decision to construct an official residence for the Vice President in 2004 to reduce inconveniences and recurrent expenditures associated with renovation of personal residences of people appointed to the position mainly to upgrade security.
“As we are all aware, there has not been an official residence for the Vice President. Indeed, the government has had to renovate the personal residences of those appointed to the position of Vice President mainly to upgrade security,” he noted.
He further added with appreciation that the government has, in the last 10 years, completed over 200 development projects that had stalled across the country.
“As will be recalled, we identified, 10 years ago, a total of 226 stalled projects in the country and undertook to complete them. I am pleased that almost all these stalled projects across the country have been completed and are being utilised for the purposes they were intended for,” he said.
Speaking during the function, Vice President Kalonzo Musyoka thanked the government for constructing an official residence of the VP.
He further commended the leadership of President Kibaki for the focused commitment to infrastructure development in the country.
He in particular cited the Kibera slum up-grading project that he added was aimed at giving the slum dwellers decent houses.
