Mobile phone manufacturer Samsung has sold more than 10 million units of its flagship smartphone, the powerful Galaxy S III, in less than two months since the handset was first introduced in London on May 29.
Samsung President Shin Jong-kyun informed Korean news agency Yonhap News of the record on Sunday but refrained from providing exact sales figures.
“This translates into about 190,000 Galaxy S3s being sold every day, and easily ahead of its very popular predecessor — the Galaxy S2 — that reported sales hitting 10 million, five months after it reached consumers,” said Yonhap News.
Samsung East Africa has not yet released official sales figures for the SIII in Kenya since its launch at the beginning of this month. But the local office has said Samsung demands 55.6 percent of the smartphone market.
“The Galaxy Pocket sales have been good and the SIII is expected to do well for that range of handset,” said a source at Samsung East Africa. “GFK (the global research company) does not consider tabs as smartphones, so the market share could be higher.”
Rival Apple reported that it sold more than 4 million units of its iPhone 4S in the three days after its launch on October 14, 2011.
In December 2011 Samsung said that it had sold more than 300 million mobile handsets globally.
Samsung, now the world’s leading mobile phone maker, was named the number one brand in the Asia-Pacific region for 2012 in the ninth edition of Asia’s Top 1000 Brands Report. It outranked electronics brands including Apple, Sony, Canon, Panasonic and LG to pick up the coveted top place.
