NAIROBI, Kenya, June 16 – The world’s leading smartphones manufacturer Samsung Electronics has reiterated its corporate plans to support local Mobile Web Application developers to access the global market.

In a strategic move geared at boosting local technology entrepreneurship prospects, Samsung Electronics has confirmed plans to provide support to local developers deploying their applications on the popular Android platform.

Samsung’s support will involve hosting commercially viable applications covering a wide range of categories on at its Samsung Apps Store, which comes as a standard feature on all Samsung smartphones.

Speaking during the Google Student Summit in Nairobi, Samsung Electronics Africa Product Manager Jaco Van Zyl encouraged local App developers to consider developing solutions with a global market appeal.

He explained that the Samsung App store is accessed by millions of mobile phone subscribers’ globally seeking to download quality android applications in diverse categories such as Entertainment, Education, Games, Lifestyle, Travel and Productivity among others.

“Kenyan Application developers on the Android platform have equal access to other global developers to showcase their solutions on the Samsung Apps store which is a gateway to global tech-preneurship,” van Zyl noted.

“Local developers already appear to be gearing up for the available opportunities, which is encouraging to device manufacturers’ such as Samsung Electronics,” he added.

During the Google Student Summit held at the Oshwal Complex, Samsung executives demonstrated to local technology students the options available on Samsung devices.

The demonstration session supports Samsung’s business growth strategy for Kenya and the rest of Africa, based on creating an entrepreneurial attitude among the Kenyan youth in the Information, Communication and Technology (ICT) sector.

Using Samsung’s latest innovations, the Galaxy Pocket and Samsung Galaxy SIII, the students were taken through the key value added features of smartphones supported by the android platforms.

“The android platform makes up 53 percent of all the operating systems in the market, with the key benefit being its versatility and capacity to host more applications and features thus enhancing the phone’s effectiveness,” Samsung Electronics East Africa Business Leader Robert Ngeru said.

The Summit brings together students from different Universities across Sub-Saharan Africa, with an aim of enhancing their professional development, leadership, and communication skills, as well as access to a unique network of Google Ambassadors.
